Operator’s Guide: Power Plant Simulator

This guide will walk you through the standard operating procedures for the key tasks in the simulator.

I. Interface Overview

Before you begin, familiarize yourself with the main sections of your control room:

  1. Header Controls (Top):
    • Operation Mode: This is the most important switch.
      • Isolated Grid: You are the sole power provider. You control the system’s overall voltage and frequency. This is the mode for starting from a “blackout” (a “black start”).
      • Infinite Grid (Utility): You are connecting to a large, stable utility grid. You cannot change the grid’s voltage or frequency. Your only job is to control your generator’s kW (real power) and kVAR (reactive power) output.
  2. Generator Control Panel (One for each Generator):
    • Status Light: Shows the generator’s state: Off, Green (Running/Ready), Blue (Online/Connected to Bus), Red/Blinking (Tripped/Fault).
    • Meters: Real-time values for this specific generator.
    • Governor Slider: Adjusts the engine’s speed. This directly controls Frequency (Hz) when the generator is offline and Kilowatts (kW) when it’s online.
    • Voltage Reg. (AVR) Slider: Adjusts the exciter’s output. This directly controls Voltage (V) when offline and Kilovars (kVAR) when online.
    • Breaker Switch: A virtual switch to connect (close) or disconnect (open) the generator from the main bus.
    • START/STOP Buttons: Turns the diesel engine on or off.
  3. System Bus & Sync Panel (Right Side):
    • Master Bus Status: Shows the combined status of the main power bus that all generators connect to.
    • Sync Selector: Choose which offline generator you want to monitor for synchronization.
    • Synchroscope: The primary tool for synchronizing. The needle shows the phase difference between the selected generator and the bus.
      • Needle Rotation Speed: Indicates the frequency difference. Fast rotation = large difference. Slow rotation = small difference.
      • Needle Rotation Direction: Clockwise = Gen is faster (FAST). Counter-clockwise = Gen is slower (SLOW).
      • Needle Position: The “12 o’clock” position means the generator and bus are perfectly in-phase.
    • Sync Lights: Visual aids. They will blink in sequence. When they are fully dark, the generator is in-phase.
  4. Event Logbook (Bottom):
    • Records every action you take and every significant system event with a timestamp. Always check the log for feedback and error messages!

II. Operating Procedures

Scenario 1: Black Start (Starting the First Generator in Isolated Mode)

This procedure establishes your own grid from nothing.

  1. Select Mode: Ensure the Operation Mode is set to Isolated Grid.
  2. Start Engine: Click the START button for Generator 1.
  3. Observe Warm-up: The status light will turn green. Watch the Frequency and Voltage meters for Gen 1. They will climb towards the base values (60 Hz and 480V). The logbook will announce when the generator is “warmed up and ready.”
  4. Close Breaker: Since there is no power on the bus (it’s “dead”), you do not need to synchronize. Click the Breaker Switch for Generator 1 to close it.
  5. Confirm Online Status: The breaker will turn green, and the status light will turn blue (Online). The Master Bus Status meters will now show the values from Generator 1.
  6. Check Load: The system will automatically apply a small load, and you will see a kW and kVAR reading on both the generator and the bus.

Congratulations, you have established a grid! You are now powering the load. Use the Governor and Voltage Regulator sliders to keep the bus frequency and voltage stable at 60 Hz and 480V as the load changes.

Scenario 2: Synchronizing and Paralleling a Second Generator

This is the most critical operator skill. The goal is to perfectly match the incoming generator (Gen 2) to the live bus before closing the breaker.

  1. Start Second Generator: Click START for Generator 2. Wait for it to warm up (check the log). It will run independently at its own frequency and voltage.
  2. Select for Sync: On the Sync Panel, use the Select Gen to Sync dropdown to choose Generator 2. The synchroscope will now monitor Gen 2 against the bus.
  3. Match Voltage:
    • Look at the Bus Voltage meter (e.g., 480V).
    • Use the Voltage Reg. slider on Generator 2 to adjust its voltage so it is slightly higher than the bus (e.g., 490V-500V).
  4. Match Frequency:
    • Look at the Bus Frequency meter (e.g., 60.00 Hz).
    • Use the Governor slider on Generator 2 to adjust its frequency so it is very slightly higher than the bus (e.g., 60.10 Hz).
    • This will cause the Synchroscope needle to rotate slowly in the clockwise (FAST) direction. If it’s too fast, slightly lower the frequency. You want about one full rotation every 5-10 seconds.
  5. Synchronize and Close In:
    • This requires precise timing. The goal is to close the breaker at the exact moment the needle points to 12 o’clock.
    • Watch the needle rotate. As it approaches the 12 o’clock position (around 11 o’clock), get ready.
    • Click the Breaker Switch for Generator 2 just before it hits the top.
  6. Confirm and Share Load:
    • If successful, the log will confirm the breaker is closed, and the status light will turn blue. Gen 2 is now online!
    • If you fail (BAD SYNC in the log), the breaker will not close. Re-check your voltage and frequency and try again.
    • Immediately after closing, use the Governor and Voltage Reg. sliders on both Gen 1 and Gen 2 to balance the kW and kVAR readings between them.

Scenario 3: Removing a Generator from the Bus

You cannot simply open the breaker on a loaded generator. You must unload it first.

  1. Select Generator to Remove: Let’s say you want to remove Generator 2.
  2. Shed Real Power (kW): Slowly move the Governor slider for Gen 2 downwards. Watch its kW meter drop. The other generator(s) will automatically pick up this load. Continue until the kW reading for Gen 2 is below 50.
  3. Shed Reactive Power (kVAR): Simultaneously, slowly move the Voltage Reg. slider for Gen 2 downwards. Watch its kVAR meter drop towards zero. Continue until the kVAR reading is below 50.
  4. Open Breaker: Once the generator is carrying almost no load, click its Breaker Switch to open it. The status light will change from blue back to green.
  5. Stop Engine: Click the STOP button for Generator 2.

Scenario 4: Operating on an Infinite Grid

  1. Select Mode: Switch the Operation Mode to Infinite Grid. The bus frequency and voltage will immediately lock to 60 Hz and 480V.
  2. Start and Sync: Follow the exact same procedure as Scenario 2 to start and synchronize a generator. The only difference is that the bus values will not fluctuate.
  3. Control Output: Once your generator is online, notice the difference:
    • The Governor slider no longer tries to change frequency. It now directly sets the kW output you are pushing to the grid.
    • The Voltage Reg. slider no longer tries to change voltage. It now directly sets the kVAR output.
    • Your task is to meet a specific power demand by adjusting your kW and kVAR output with the sliders.
